It is a beautiful July morning around She is surprised because he likes to sleep in on the
weekend when he doesn’t have to work. Tina and Tony have been married for five years and,
while things started out fine, Tina has noticed that Tony often fails to tell
her what his plans are and just assumes she will read his mind. When Tony comes out of the shower, he is dressed and
ready to head out. He seems in a hurry
and doesn’t want to take the time to talk. “Where are you going?” Tina asks.
“Oh, remember Dave called last night?” “Yes.” “Well, Dan dropped out of his foursome this morning
and he wants me to play” “I thought you said you’d go with me to pick out the
furniture today?” “Oh yeah, well, we can do it some other time. The living room has been empty for
months. Another week won’t hurt.” “But you have to work next weekend. That’s why we
were going today.” Tina is getting upset now! “Oh” Tony says with a shrug. “Right I do have to work. Well, um.
Can’t you go by yourself? I don’t
care what you buy. Just get what you
want.” “You are the one that said we are on a budget.” “Well, I don’t mean you spend whatever you want. Look I can’t talk about this right now. John is picking me up and I’m already late.” Tina watches Tony walk out the door. She is angry and frustrated. Why didn’t Tony tell her that Dave called to
ask him to play? “Because”, she says to herself, “He knew I’d be angry
and he didn’t want to argue about it, so he figured he’d just slip out.” Tina calls her friend, Nancy and invites her out for
the day. Together they drive up to a
favorite town about an hour north of her house.
There are lots of shops, galleries and artisans
there. Nancy and Tina spend the day
browsing the shops, and sit in a sidewalk café drinking coffee and chatting. As they are headed back to the car, Tina sees a
beautiful comforter in a store window. It is hand made and just the right color for the new
decorating scheme she is contemplating. On a whim, she buys the $500.00 comforter, knowing
that Tony is going to be angry. But, she doesn’t care.
